Diary, 1862-1863.

Includes anecdotes about camp life in Indiana and Kentucky, troop movements, forced marches, encounters with General John Hunt Morgan's men, guarding railroads and bridges in Indiana, foraging for food, and observations of events in Louisville. He also describes a blockade of the Ohio River by "the Johnnies," the killing of William Nelson at the Galt House, the Battle of Perryville, guarding prisoners, burial of bodies, picket duty at Salt River and other locations, a visit to Mammoth Cave for water, and treatment of his ailments at Kentucky, Indiana and Chicago hospitals. The diary also lists officers and men of his unit with an alphabetical roster of his company, and what happened to each man according to Culp's knowledge. This diary is a copy made by Culp from the original, ca. 1880.

Organized in South Bend, Indiana in 1862, the 87th Indiana Regiment was mustered in on 31 August. The 87th saw action in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. While in the Carolinas the Pioneer Brigade became legendary for its construction of roads and bridges. The regiment moved up to Richmond, Virginia and on to Washington City where it participated in General Sherman's grand review. The 87th was mustered out on 21 June 1865. Culp served as a private in Company G, 87th Infantry Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers, from 12 August 1862 until 30 July 1863, when he was discharged for disability.
